Bugün geri döndüm Çin'e. Bir haftadır Tayland'daki köydeydim. Günlerimi bahçede çalışarak ve avlunun sağında solunda pinekleyerek geçirdim. Üç yıl aradan sonra başka bir ülkeye gitmek, sevdiğim ve tanıdığım insanlarla bir araya gelmek güzel oldu, bir nebze rahatlattı beni. Bu güzel günlerin bir bedeli olmalıydı tabii ki! Çin'e geri döndüğümde her zamanki olumsuz durumla karşı karşıya kaldım. Önce pasaportu mıncık mıncık ettiler, sonra beni kenara çektiler, çantamı deştiler, yığınla soru sordular, adresimi ve telefon numaramı defalarca sordular. Oturma iznim ve vizem olmasına rağmen bir türlü ikna olmadılar. Benim sinirli tavırlarımı gören kadın memur "Please cooperate!" deyip durdu. İçimden "Gel sen cooperate, her geldiğimde aynı muameleye maruz kalıyorum." dedim ama yapacak bir şey yoktu. 1 saate varan uzun beklemeden sonra nihayet pasaporta mühür vurdular. Çıkarken görevli memura bunu neden yaptıklarını sordum. Bana 12367 numarasını aramamı söyledi. Ben de daha taksiye bile binmeden aradım numarayı. Telefondaki kızın (National Immigration Administration'da çalışan görevli) İngilizcesi pek iyi değildi ama iyi kötü anlaştık. Bana, "Sizi bir buçuk saat sonra arayacağız" dedi ama kimse aramadı beni. Neyse ki telefonu kapatmadan önce kurumun elmek adresini almıştım. Eve gelince, 2-3 saat kadar uyudum. Gecenin uykusuzluğu vardı. Kalkınca da bir şeyler atıştırdım ve kızın verdiği elmek adresine aşağıdaki uzun mesajı yazdım. Bakalım ne yanıt verecekler. Pek umudum yok ama olsun. Belki sesimi çıkarırsam bir çözüme ulaşırız. Mektubu buraya da koyayım, tarihe bir not geçilmiş olsun.

Dear administrative officer,
My name is ALIRIZA ARICAN. I am a 46 years old Turkish citizen who has been working in China since August 2013. I have worked in Changzhou in Jiangsu Province as a Math Teacher and Head of the AP Department for 8 years. In 2021, I moved to Shenzhen and started working here as a Math Teacher at an international school.
Despite the fact that I am an honest, law-abiding, productive immigrant worker in China, I have been increasingly put in awkward situations by the immigration officers at the borders. There is nothing wrong with my residence permit or with my passport, nor I did do anything against the laws of China. However, every time I enter China (so far, at least 7 times), the immigration officers at the borders stop me, question me for long hours, check my bag, ignore my questions for clarifications and leave me baffled by the uncomfortable treatment that I believe I did not deserve. They even put a soldier with a rifle next to me once (in Nanjing airport) while they were seeing my documents in another room! Sadly, while I am waiting there for my passport's return, many of my non-Turkish friends (British, American, Australian etc...) who work for the same school pass the border without a single question.
Just this morning, entering China from Shenzhen Bay Border, they made me wait for an hour, checked every page of my passport again and again and again, asked for my home address even though I clearly wrote it on the arrival card, asked the name of the school I worked for, emptied my bag etc... If this treatment happens only once, I would have ignored it and never mentioned it to anyone. However, it happens whenever I enter China and it seems it will happen this summer again when I return to China from visiting my parents in Turkey.
Now, saying all this, I would like to make it clear that this e-mail is written as a request to understand the situation than a letter of complaint. I am surely upset, feeling humiliated, and frustrated but my point is beyond these mere human emotions. I would like to know what I should do to avoid these time-consuming and awkward situations! Is there any way to improve my paperwork, is there any quick way to earn the trust of the immigration officers so that they will not need to put an armed soldier next to a Math teacher? As I mentioned above, I am a law-abiding, tax-paying immigrant who is being well-respected both by his colleagues and his students. I even received Changzhou Honorary Citizenship Award in 2019 for my efforts as an educator. I educate and inspire the youth of China in any way I can. However, the way I get treated at the borders does not fairly reflect what I do for this country.
